General Information

What warranties do you offer at BVW Jewelers?

BVW Jewelers provides a comprehensive warranty that covers all jewelry against defects in materials and craftsmanship. This warranty does not cover damage due to misuse, daily wear and tear, or loss of stones larger than 0.25 carats, which should be covered under your personal jewelry insurance.

Do you offer appraisals or insurance?

We provide detailed appraisals for $100 per item, conducted by our certified GIA appraiser located in our local jewelry store. Additionally, we have a Master Jeweler with over 35 years of experience overseeing all evaluations. While we don't offer insurance directly, we recommend GemShield for comprehensive jewelry insurance to protect your valuable pieces.

What is your return/exchange policy?

You have 12 days from the date you receive your jewelry to initiate a return, provided the items are in their original, unworn condition with tags and original packaging. A receipt or proof of purchase is required. To begin the return process, please contact us at sales@bvwjewelers.com. Upon approval, we will provide a return shipping label and detailed instructions. Returns without prior approval will not be accepted.

Can I visit your studio?

Absolutely! Britten Wolf and our staff are always ready to assist you with any questions. We welcome you to visit our studio by appointment to discuss custom designs or view our collection. You can reach us via chat here on our website, or at sales@bvwjewelers.com.

Mastering Ring Sizing

How do I discreetly find out my partner’s ring size?

Determining your partner's ring size without them knowing adds an element of surprise to gifting a ring. One effective method is to secretly borrow one of their rings, making sure to note the finger it is worn on, and bring it to us. This information allows us to accurately gauge the correct size. Alternatively, you can ask close friends or family members for assistance, ensuring they keep the secret!

What is the best way to get my finger sized correctly?

To ensure your ring fits perfectly, we recommend visiting BVW Jewelers for a professional sizing. If you're unable to visit our store, any reputable local jeweler can size your finger. It’s important to measure using a ring sizer similar in width to the ring you plan to purchase, as the band's width can impact the fit.

Can you explain the difference between comfort fit and regular fit rings?

A comfort fit ring is designed with a curved interior, making it easier to slide over the knuckle and comfortable for continuous wear, ideal for those with active lifestyles or larger knuckles. Regular fit rings have a flat interior and offer a snug fit, which helps prevent the ring from turning on the finger. Each fit has its benefits, and the choice often depends on personal preference and comfort.

My ring doesn’t fit. What should I do?

If your new ring from BVW Jewelers doesn’t fit, please contact us immediately. We offer free resizing for rings within the first 30 days after purchase, subject to terms and conditions depending on the ring design and material. Our goal is to ensure your ring fits perfectly for years to come.

Understanding Jewelry Metals

What’s the difference between various jewelry metals?

Choosing the right metal for your jewelry is crucial as each has unique properties and aesthetic appeals. Here’s a brief overview:

Gold is highly customizable in terms of color (yellow, white, and rose) and purity (10k, 14k, 18k). Its versatility and hypoallergenic nature make it a popular choice.

Platinum is exceptionally durable and pure, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin. It’s heavier and more expensive but well worth the investment for its longevity.

Silver offers a softer option with a classic appeal, ideal for less frequently worn or fashion pieces. It requires more maintenance due to tarnishing.

Which metal is best for my jewelry?

The best metal depends on your lifestyle, budget, and aesthetic preference:

Gold is perfect for everyday wear, especially in lower karats, which are more durable due to higher alloy content.

Platinum is best for engagement rings and wedding bands due to its strength and minimal upkeep.

Silver is suitable for casual jewelry that's not meant for constant wear.

What can I do with my old jewelry?

At BVW Jewelers, we encourage you to bring in your old jewelry to repurpose into something new. Utilizing your existing precious metals not only offers a cost-effective solution but also adds sentimental value to your custom designs. This sustainable option allows you to transform outdated pieces into modern jewelry that fits your current style while offering the best value.

What is rhodium plating?

Rhodium plating is applied to white gold and silver items to enhance their luster and prevent tarnishing, ensuring a vibrant and new appearance. At BVW Jewelers, we offer rhodium plating services free of charge. These services are available even while you wait, and you don't need to have purchased your jewelry from us. We believe that you shouldn't have to pay to keep your jewelry looking clean. Learn more here.

Why is my silver jewelry changing colors?

Silver naturally tarnishes when exposed to oxygen and sulfur in the air, resulting in a darker hue. Regular cleaning and proper storage can minimize this effect.

How should I clean my jewelry?

At BVW Jewelers, we encourage our clients to bring their jewelry to us for cleaning, which only takes a few minutes and is a complimentary service. Regular professional cleaning helps maintain the sparkle and beauty of your pieces and allows us to check the integrity of your fine jewelry, ensuring everything is in perfect condition. You're welcome to come by anytime for this free service.

Diamonds and Gemstones

What is the difference between karat and carat, and what does 14KP mean?

These terms are often confused but refer to different aspects of jewelry:

Karat (K) is used to measure the purity of gold. Pure gold is 24 karats, meaning all 24 parts are gold with no alloy metals. Lower karats indicate more alloy content, affecting the strength, color, and value. For example, 18K gold consists of 18 parts gold and 6 parts alloy.

Carat (ct) measures the weight of diamonds and other gemstones. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams or 100 points. This means that each point is 2 milligrams or 0.02 carats. A smaller gem, such as one that is 0.01 carats, would also be referred to as 1 point, making it 1/100th of a carat. These precise measurements help in accurately determining a gemstone's size and value.

14KP stands for 14 karat plumb, guaranteeing that the item contains precisely 14 parts gold per 24 parts total, ensuring the purity is exactly as stated. This is particularly important for those requiring exact information on their jewelry's gold content.

Can you set my heirloom gemstone or diamond?

Absolutely! BVW Jewelers specializes in integrating heirloom gemstones and diamonds into new settings, preserving sentimental value while offering a fresh aesthetic. We carefully inspect each heirloom piece to ensure it can be securely set in your chosen design.

Will you set a diamond or gemstone purchased elsewhere?

Yes, we will set diamonds or gemstones purchased elsewhere. However, we cannot guarantee against potential damage that may occur from pre-existing flaws or imperfections in the gemstones . Our selection of select loose diamonds and GIA-certified diamonds are sourced from the highest ethical standards. When setting a stone not purchased from us, a setting fee based on the size of the gemstone will apply.

What are the 4 C’s of diamond quality?

The 4 C's—Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut—are critical factors that define a diamond's quality and value:

Carat refers to the weight of the diamond, affecting its size and visual impact.

Color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (light color). Colorless diamonds are the most sought-after and valuable.

Clarity measures the cleanliness or purity of a diamond. It ranges from Flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to Included (inclusions visible to the naked eye).

Cut is perhaps the most important, as it determines how well a diamond's facets interact with light. It affects the brilliance, fire, and scintillation of the diamond.

What is a synthetic diamond or synthetic gemstone?

Synthetic diamonds and gemstones, also known as lab-grown or cultured gems, are manufactured in controlled laboratory environments using advanced technological processes that mimic the natural growth conditions of minerals. These gems are physically, chemically, and optically identical to their natural counterparts but are more environmentally sustainable and cost-effective. They provide an ethical alternative by reducing the demand for mining, which can be disruptive to ecosystems and communities. To learn more about the benefits and options of lab-grown diamonds, please visit our detailed guide here.

Why might I consider getting a synthetic diamond or gemstone over a natural one?

Choosing synthetic diamonds or gemstones offers several advantages:

Sustainability: Lab-grown gems significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with traditional mining processes.

Ethics: Synthetic gems avoid the often controversial conditions of gemstone mining, providing a guilt-free purchasing experience.

Cost-Effectiveness: Generally, synthetic stones are less expensive than their natural counterparts, making high-quality gemstones more accessible.

Quality and Variety: Lab-grown gems can be produced with fewer imperfections and may offer a wider range of colors and clarity than naturally available options.

However, there are also considerations to keep in mind:

Investment Value: Natural diamonds and gemstones typically hold their value better and may appreciate over time, unlike synthetic versions.

Emotional Appeal: Some buyers may prefer the traditional and natural origin of gems, which carry unique histories.
